My kids love a good Christmas Tree Lighting. The one is Celina is their favorite...I mean they saw reindeer, Santa and a huge Christmas tree last year as well as got train rides, hot chocolate and a larger than life snow globe photo! What are you grateful for?

As Thanksgiving and Christmas are fast approaching I have a tendency to get all sentimental. This Thanksgiving and Christmas will be our first year in Texas with no family close by. And that is okay because I have met amazing women in Celina Ladies & Friends that have embraced my family. Besides my family, which I am grateful for, I am truly grateful for my girlfriends. If I need to get out of the house I now have women to call that will get me out of the house. They push

Almost Thanksgiving!

We are 12 days away from Thanksgiving day. Last year, when I hosted a student from Europe, this was the holiday she was most excited for! She had only seen how Thanksgiving is celebrated on TV and movies. After explaining the story of the Mayflower and the pilgrims to her we went into the food. Stuffing, turkey, mashed potatoes, ham, cranberry sauce, mac and cheese, green beans, sweet potatoes and 2 pies. We prepared and baked every single item, even though it took us a f

October Breast Cancer Awareness month

This month is a very important month to bring awareness about checking on "The Girls". Every 2 minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. It is scary to receive that diagnosis. While I have been lucky so far in not receiving this news; my younger sister had a double mastectomy in her 20's and a cousin underwent treatment in her 50's and she is currently in remission. Breast cancer does not discriminate and sometimes, though rare, it will also affect men. So what can

Christmas Traditions

One of my favorite things about the holidays are all of the new and old traditions that are shared among family and friends. I was recently meeting with friends and we were discussing our different holiday traditions when Las Posadas was mention. I love to hear how everyone celebrates their family holiday traditions and one of our members shared this wonderful personal story with us. LAS POSADAS is a Hispanic Christmas tradition that starts December 16th and ends December 24t

Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month

Former President Lyndon B. Johnson created National Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968. In 1988 then President, Ronald Reagan expanded it to National Hispanic Heritage month. It officially starts September 15th and goes until October 15th. The starting date has a strong significance as it is the Independence day for many Latin American countries. This month is for exploring the enduring contributions that Latinos have made. About learning more about the heritage and honoring

What I've learned about Texas Gardening...

Mosquitoes love me! And so do chiggers, midges and spiders. And fire ants...yeah I once sat on an anthill when I was potting flowers, not a fun experience! This month marks my one year anniversary in Texas. My family moved here from a small house in California which had no space for a garden. Once we moved here we went all out and started our garden beds this Spring. Luckily we have had really nice neighbors and friends who have let us in on which natural insect repellen

National Ice Cream Day!

Today is National Ice Cream Day! Here is a guest blog written by a participant of Celina Ladies and Friends, Lindsay Harper. Hope you all enjoy! What we experience through our senses can take us back to a great memory or tradition. For me, the sweet smell of fresh peaches takes me back to where I grew up. Our small farming community in Northern California was always full of hustle, tending to the crops that would feed others. There was nothing better than taking a moment t

The beginnings of going green

"Save the's the only planet with chocolate..." Going green....sounds kinda scary and like it would take lots of changes and work, or so I thought. As I have young kids I am always thinking of their future. What will the planet be like for them? Will it be as beautiful as it is now if we continue going at this pace? All of these questions and many more that I will not get into have prompted me to make small changes in our family lifestyle. I grew up at a time wh
