It's the 4th of July, which means BBQ's and fireworks. I personally have one dog that just does not do well with all of the loud noises. According to PetAmberAlert.com, Animal Control services increase 30% from July 4th - 6th with July 5th being one of the busiest days at an animal shelter. There are things you can do to help keep your pets safe this 4th. See below for some suggestions.
1. Microchipping - Once microchipped it lasts their lifetime. Many police stations have pet scanners so if your dog happens to runaway and a good Samaritan takes them in and they are chipped it makes a reunion much more possible. Make sure you update your info any time you move! If you look around Facebook this time of the year there are always events going on for low cost microchipping.
2. Distraction - Keep them in a room that is insulated from the noise, play music for them, give them a treat after a firework goes off. We also make sure her bed area has fresh sheets and chew toys so she knows she can curl up in there.
3. Supplements - We have tried a thunder shirt (didn't work for us, may work for you) and there are also supplements that are aimed at calming a dogs anxiety. Just Food for Dogs has some great calming pills and there are lots of other anxiety relief treats on the market now. We give our Shelby melatonin to help her out (recommended by her vet) Check with your vet before administering any medication.
